Christmas Gift Plot Foiled by Authorities
An Italian national has been sentenced to three years in prison for attempting to traffic ketamine hidden in Christmas gifts. The 27-year-old was arrested in January 2024 after Australian Border Force (ABF) officers discovered 1.5kg of high-purity ketamine concealed inside stuffed toys in a package from Spain. After replacing the drugs with a harmless substance, authorities delivered the package to a Coogee residence, where the man was arrested.

The Perth District Court sentenced him on October 22, 2024. After serving 18 months in custody, he will be released on a good behaviour order. Authorities highlighted the dangers of illegal ketamine, which can cause severe health issues such as seizures and memory loss. The man was charged with attempting to traffic in a controlled drug.
This case serves as a warning to criminal syndicates attempting to smuggle illicit substances into Australia during the busy holiday season.
