Investigation Launched After Tragic Loss of Two NSW Police Dogs

NSW Police Mourns Loss of PD Xtra and DD Soldier

An investigation is underway after two NSW Police dogs, PD Xtra and DD Soldier, were found deceased in a police vehicle at a training facility in Lucas Heights, Sydney.

On Thursday, 31 October 2024, the dogs and their handler participated in a command development day, with the dogs kept in air-conditioned pods within the handler’s vehicle. Around 12:30 p.m., a routine check revealed the tragic loss of both dogs, who were later taken to a veterinary clinic but could not be revived.

PD Xtra, a German Shepherd, served as a general-purpose police dog since 2018, while DD Soldier was undergoing training with the Dog Unit, beginning his service in February 2024.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb expressed sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the importance of a thorough investigation. Assistant Commissioner Stephen Hegarty noted the emotional impact of the loss on the police community, with support services provided for affected staff.
