Beware of the Growing Flexible Work Scam
A new employment scam is targeting individuals seeking flexible work options, such as remote jobs. In just three months, WA ScamNet received 20 reports of this scam, with financial losses totaling approximately $510,000. The largest individual loss reached $194,151, while the smallest was $350.
The scam typically begins when victims are contacted through social media or messaging platforms like WhatsApp or Telegram, offering easy online jobs with no experience required. These fake job offers promise high returns and flexible working conditions, often appealing to international students. Scammers ask victims to perform simple tasks like clicking links or reviewing products, all while encouraging them to “invest” in cryptocurrency.

Once victims invest money, they realize they’ve been deceived. The scammers then demand further payments, often accompanied by harassment. In some cases, victims are also asked for personal identification, which scammers may use for identity theft.
Protect Yourself from Job Scams
Be cautious of unsolicited job offers on social media or message platforms, never pay upfront to secure a job, and avoid sharing personal information. If you’ve fallen victim, report the scam to your financial institution and authorities.
