How Lord Howe Islanders Cope with the High Cost of Living in Paradise

Community Efforts to Offset Rising Costs on Lord Howe Island

Living on Lord Howe Island comes with many challenges, especially high costs. The Island Trader, the island’s supply ship, delivers goods every two weeks from Port Macquarie, adding up to 50% to living expenses due to shipping fees.

Residents often spend $150 in freight costs to get $400 worth of groceries. Essentials like a small coffee jar can cost $17, while fuel prices reach $4 per liter.

Islanders, like Anthony Riddle, embrace resourcefulness by fishing and buying in bulk to keep costs manageable. Others, like Yolante Eeles and Tim Cruickshank, adjust their restaurant offerings based on available supplies.

Bartering is also common, with locals exchanging homegrown produce for cash or credit. The community’s collaborative spirit helps offset the challenges of living in this remote paradise.

While the NSW government has subsidized freight services to reduce costs, many residents still hope for more support to make living on the island more affordable. Despite the challenges, islanders like Jack Shick find joy in self-sufficiency, relying on their gardens and the sea to fill their dinner plates.
