Authorities Warn Against Dangerous Mini Jelly Products
Health authorities in Sydney have confiscated and destroyed over 11,000 mini jelly cups containing the hazardous substance konjac.
The jelly cups, found in three Western Sydney businesses, pose a serious choking hazard as konjac, derived from the konnyaku plant, prevents the jelly from dissolving when ingested. This can lead to choking or even block the stomach.
Konjac, also known as glucomannan or yam flour, has been linked to multiple deaths in Australia and abroad, prompting its ban in certain products.
Despite this, the dangerous jelly cups were still being stocked by local businesses in Wetherill Park, Wentworth Point, and Banksmeadow.

NSW Health and NSW Fair Trading, alerted by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), acted swiftly to remove the products from the market.
Businesses were ordered to stop selling the jelly cups, destroy their stock, and issue a recall for any sold items. Thankfully, only one packet had been sold and was returned.
NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Natasha Mann emphasized the importance of consumers checking product labels to avoid banned substances like konjac.
She also warned businesses that strict actions will be taken against those who attempt to import or sell these hazardous products.
