Tragic Accident Leads to Charges for Dangerous Driving
A 22-year-old man has been charged following a tragic car accident on the Riddoch Highway near Nangwarry on Sunday, October 27, which resulted in the death of two young children. Around 2:40 p.m., a black Holden sedan collided with an emu about five kilometers south of Nangwarry. Although the female driver of the Holden was unharmed, the accident caused a chain reaction involving two other vehicles.
A grey Toyota station wagon, carrying a family from Mount Gambier, braked to avoid the collision with the emu. However, a white Nissan ute crashed into the rear of the Toyota. Sadly, a five-year-old boy in the Toyota died at the scene. A 15-year-old girl in critical condition was taken to the hospital but passed away the next day. Other Toyota occupants, including a 42-year-old male driver, a 46-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl, and a six-year-old boy, suffered minor injuries and were hospitalized.
The driver of the Nissan was unharmed but was taken to the hospital as a precaution. On October 29, Major Crash Investigation officers arrested and charged the 22-year-old Nissan driver with two counts of causing death and four counts of causing harm by dangerous driving. He was denied bail and will appear in Mount Gambier Magistrates Court.
