Fatal Crash Causes Chemical Spill and Explosion on Bruce Highway

One Dead and Town Evacuated After Ammonium Nitrate Truck Accident in Queensland

A deadly crash involving a truck carrying ammonium nitrate has left one person dead and forced the evacuation of a small town on the Bruce Highway in Queensland.

Early on Friday morning, a utility vehicle collided with a truck transporting 42.5 tonnes of ammonium nitrate in Bororen, a rural town approximately 400 kilometers north of Brisbane.

The driver of the utility vehicle died at the scene, while the truck driver, who sustained serious injuries to his abdomen, legs, pelvis, head, and arms, was rescued by bystanders.

Shortly after the crash, the truck caught fire and began leaking its hazardous contents, leading to a significant explosion heard more than 50 kilometers away.

Queensland Police issued an emergency alert around 9:45 a.m., warning residents in Bororen to evacuate immediately and establishing a 2.5-kilometer exclusion zone around the site.

The affected section of the Bruce Highway, a crucial route, may remain closed for several days as authorities work to clear the hazardous materials and ensure safety.

The incident has left the community in shock and highlights the dangers associated with transporting hazardous chemicals on public roads.
