Aisha was only 12 when her mother introduced her to the man she was supposed to marry—a distant relative in his mid-20s. Raised in a traditional Muslim family from India, Aisha was expected to accept her fate. But she felt something was wrong and decided to fight back.
Aisha’s Rebellion and Escape

As Aisha grew older, she began to rebel against her parents’ strict rules. She stopped wearing the hijab and started skipping school. In response, her parents fast-tracked her wedding. When she was 15, Aisha discovered her parents had booked tickets to send her to India, where she’d be forced to marry.
Determined to escape, Aisha ran to her school and confided in her principal. He took her seriously and involved Legal Aid. With their help, Aisha was put on an airport watch list to prevent her from being taken overseas.
Forced Marriage in Australia
Since becoming illegal in Australia in 2013, forced marriage has remained a hidden issue, with many cases going unreported. Aisha’s story highlights the importance of awareness and support for those trapped in such situations.
Today, Aisha hopes her story will inspire others to find their strength and know they are not alone.
