End of an Era: SAPOL Hands Over Thebarton Barracks After 100 Years

Thebaton Barracks Closure Marks a New Chapter for SAPOL

Today, South Australia Police (SAPOL) closed a significant chapter with the final handover of the Thebarton Barracks after over a century of service. Commissioner Grant Stevens acknowledged the “bittersweet” farewell, as the site has played a pivotal role in SAPOL’s history since its construction in 1914.

While Thebarton Barracks served as a state-of-the-art facility in its time, SAPOL had outgrown the location, and the move to new, modern facilities marks a shift towards innovative operations. The Thebarton Barracks Project Team worked closely with the government to ensure the transition meets the operational needs of SAPOL.

Units have relocated, with some moving into temporary accommodations as their new sites are completed. Notably, the Mounted Operations Unit has settled into new facilities at Gepps Cross, and the Road Safety Centre at West Beach is set to open soon.

This move signifies SAPOL’s commitment to evolving while honoring its long-standing traditions.
