Healthcare, Hospitality, Retail, and Services Workers Face Increased Workloads
A new report from workforce management company Deputy reveals that employees in the healthcare, hospitality, retail, and services industries are working significantly longer hours compared to last month. The Hourly Work Index analyzed shifts and hours for 15 million workers across six million workplaces.
Increases in Working Hours Across Various Sectors

The report found the biggest increase in working hours among healthcare employees, including those in dental practices, doctors, and medical clinics, with a 15% rise. The accommodation sector, including hotels and similar establishments, saw a 14% increase in working hours.
Workers in childcare and community centers had a 10% rise, while bar and café workers also saw a slight increase, indicating a growing socialization trend as consumer confidence returns.
Retail workers experienced a 9% increase in working hours, while employees in services like call centers, catering, and delivery worked 7% more hours.
Concerns About Employee Turnover and Scheduling
Despite the increase in working hours suggesting positive economic activity, Deputy’s CFO Emma Seymour highlighted concerns about rising employee turnover and unpredictable scheduling.
She emphasized that consistent hours and adequate notice for shifts are essential for maintaining employee well-being and productivity.
