Police are searching for a man believed to have crucial information about a bank scam that defrauded a 91-year-old Victorian woman of $130,000. The elderly victim received a call on September 19 last year from someone she believed was her local bank.
The scammer informed her of “fraudulent charges” on her account and later visited her Foster home to collect her bank card, claiming it was for her protection.
How the Money Was Stolen
The stolen card was used 130 times before being canceled, draining a significant portion of the woman’s life savings. The scammer purchased gift cards at various stores in Chadstone and Yarraville between September 19 and 23.
A Life’s Savings Lost
Bass Coast police local area commander Jason Hullick expressed outrage over the crime, stating, “To have that taken from her is quite disgraceful, to be honest.” The victim had saved the money over a lifetime of hard work to enjoy her retirement.
Police Investigation
Detectives are reviewing evidence, including CCTV footage, and have identified a man they believe can assist with inquiries. Inspector Hullick urged the public to remain vigilant about unsolicited bank calls, emphasizing the importance of verifying such requests directly with the bank.
