The long-abandoned aquarium at Sydney’s Northern Beaches is finally set to be demolished, marking the end of an era for the once-popular Manly Sea Life Sanctuary.
Since closing in 2018, the building, also known as Oceanworld Manly, has stood derelict, attracting urban explorers who documented its decay on social media.
Transport Minister Jo Haylen announced the start of demolition, describing the building as both dangerous and unsightly. The process is expected to take up to four months and presents unique challenges, including the need to dismantle around an old shark tank and penguin pools.

Once demolished, the site will be transformed into a public space.
Although budget constraints have led to the postponement of detailed long-term plans, Transport for NSW promises to open the area for community use as soon as possible.
Julie Sundqvist of Transport for NSW emphasized that this demolition is just the beginning of a significant opportunity for revitalizing the space.
