Darwin Man Sentenced for Possessing Child Abuse Material

Collaborative Efforts Lead to Justice for Child Exploitation Victims

A 53-year-old Darwin man has been sentenced to five years and seven months in prison for possessing over 3500 files of child abuse material. He pleaded guilty to the offense in September 2024, after investigators discovered the material on nine of his electronic devices, including mobile phones, laptops, and SD cards. The search, conducted in October 2023, followed reports from the U.S. National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which led authorities to link the man to the online distribution of child abuse material.

The Northern Territory Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team (NT JACET), consisting of members from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Northern Territory Police, carried out the investigation. They uncovered sexually explicit content involving children, and the man was charged with possessing child abuse material via a carriage service.

AFP Superintendent Gregory Davis emphasized the determination to hold perpetrators accountable, stressing that each time such material is accessed or shared, it harms the victims. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies like NT JACET are crucial in combating child exploitation.

The Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE) continues to work on national strategies to prevent online child sexual exploitation. The public is urged to report any information related to child abuse to help protect vulnerable children.
