Crime Wave in Greater Darwin Area: Multiple Youth Offenders Arrested

A Series of Stolen Vehicles and Property Offenses Unfold

Northern Territory Police have apprehended multiple offenders following a series of property crimes across the Greater Darwin Area. The chaotic spree unfolded overnight, involving a group of male youths who traveled from the Western Daly Region to Adelaide River. Between 15 to 20 youths unlawfully entered a school, stealing a bus that would later serve as their means of transportation to Darwin.

After abandoning the stolen bus in Berrimah, the group targeted a business on Moo Street, where they stole two vehicles. They rammed through the gate with these vehicles to escape. The stolen cars were then used to drive to Winnellie, where the group continued their crime spree, stealing a Toyota Landcruiser utility and breaking into another business to steal a Ford Fiesta sedan. Numerous other businesses suffered damage in the process.

The group continued their thefts, obtaining additional vehicles, including two Landcruiser Troop Carriers from a licensed premises on Gilruth Avenue and a residence in Nakara. Several of the stolen vehicles were later abandoned in Nakara and at the Casuarina Coastal Reserve.

Around 3 AM, both Landcruiser Troop Carriers drove into a police cordon set up by Strike Force Trident and the Dog Operations Unit (DOU). This prompted a pursuit through Berry Springs, where one vehicle turned back towards Darwin while the other continued south. A tire deflation device (TDD) was successfully deployed on the Stuart Highway in the Acacia Hills area, leading to the apprehension of two offenders, aged 15 and 16, after a foot chase.

Shortly after, an older model Landcruiser failed to stop at a second cordon, leading to another pursuit and the eventual arrest of a 16-year-old male. Around 7:30 AM, a third Landcruiser utility also failed to stop at a traffic cordon. During this chase, the offender deliberately rammed a police vehicle, causing it to become inoperable. Four youths, all aged between 15 and 16, were apprehended at the scene.

Further investigations revealed that both utilities had been stolen from a facility in Acacia Hills earlier that night. Additionally, two males, aged 16 and 17, were arrested in the Casuarina area for their connection to the offenses.

Senior Sergeant Dale Motter-Barnard highlighted the extensive nature of the offenders’ crimes across the Greater Darwin Region, noting that significant damage had been caused. “We have now recovered seven of the eight stolen vehicles and have nine offenders in custody. The Dog Operations Unit and General Duties members from Adelaide River and Batchelor played a significant role in these apprehensions. We will continue to investigate and expect further arrests today and tomorrow.”
