Controversy Erupts Over AFL All-Australian Team Selection

Fans Question Nick Daicos’ Position on the Wing

The AFL All-Australian team announcement on Thursday night sparked widespread debate among fans. Collingwood’s star midfielder, Nick Daicos, was controversially named on the wing, despite rarely playing in that position during matches.

His selection raised eyebrows, with many fans questioning why a player known for his midfield presence was chosen for a wing role.

Daicos’ inclusion meant that Hawthorn’s specialist wingman, Massimo D’Ambrosio, missed out on what could have been his first All-Australian selection.

Even Errol Gulden, who was selected for the other wing spot, commented on Daicos’ limited time playing on the wing during the season.

Aside from Daicos, there were other surprises and omissions in the team. Brisbane’s Harris Andrews, North Melbourne’s Harry Sheezel and Tristan Xerri, Carlton’s Charlie Curnow, and Essendon’s Zach Merrett were all considered unlucky to miss out.

However, Carlton’s Jacob Weitering and several others made their first All-Australian appearances.

The selection of Western Bulldogs’ Marcus Bontempelli as captain and Melbourne’s Max Gawn for his seventh All-Australian selection highlighted a night filled with both celebration and contention, reflecting the unpredictable nature of the AFL’s best-of-the-best choices.
