McDonald’s Faces Legal Action Amid Widespread E. Coli Outbreak
A Colorado resident, Eric Stelly, has filed a lawsuit against McDonald’s after contracting E. coli allegedly linked to the fast-food chain’s Quarter Pounder burgers.
This E. coli outbreak, which has spread across Western and Midwestern states, has left nearly 50 people ill, 10 hospitalized, and one dead. The lawsuit, filed in Chicago where McDonald’s is headquartered, seeks $50,000 in damages, citing negligence in food handling.
McDonald’s has since removed Quarter Pounders from 20% of its U.S. locations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are investigating the possible sources of contamination, particularly focusing on onions and beef patties supplied by California-based Taylor Farms.
Other chains, including Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and KFC, have also pulled fresh onions as a precaution. The FDA and USDA are currently examining both onion and beef sources to identify the cause and prevent further incidents.
