A New Approach to Education
Chevalier College, a Catholic school in New South Wales, has permanently implemented a flexible learning model for its senior students after a successful year-long trial. This model allows senior students to work from home one day a week, while all students participate in self-directed learning on Mondays.
Research showed that senior students experienced better independence and time management, though younger students struggled with the unstructured format.
Some parents voiced concerns about the flexibility for younger students, but the school plans to improve support by introducing self-regulation and time management training. Principal Greg Miller acknowledged the need for adjustments to address these concerns.
Teachers have also benefitted from the extra planning time on Flipped Mondays, leading to enhanced co-planning and professional development.
Chevalier’s bold move has drawn attention from other schools exploring flexible learning models to meet the evolving educational needs of modern students.
As education adapts to a changing world, this program has shown that flexibility can promote student independence and success.
