Chaos Erupts at Women’s Rights Rally Amidst Counter-Protest

On Saturday afternoon, a women’s rights rally in Melbourne descended into chaos after a group of counter-protesters disrupted the event.

The Women Will Speak rally, held on the steps of Parliament House, was organized to voice concerns about aspects of the transgender movement. The rally, which attracted around 20 participants, was soon overwhelmed by approximately 150 counter-protesters.

The situation turned chaotic as the counter-protesters threw eggs and water balloons at the rally speakers. Despite the commotion, Victoria Police reported that no injuries occurred.

However, a 36-year-old woman from Brunswick was arrested for allegedly assaulting police and has since been released pending further investigation.

Victoria Police expressed disappointment over the disruption, emphasizing their commitment to peaceful protests and a zero-tolerance stance on violence and disruptive actions.

The Trans Queer Solidarity group, which organized the counter-protest, had previously posted a notice on the Green Left website criticizing the rally’s organizers and promoting their counter-demonstration.

The incident highlights the tensions surrounding debates on gender and the challenges of maintaining peaceful discourse in contentious public gatherings.
