Cairns Police Warn Residents to Stay Vigilant Against Romance Scams

Understanding Romance Scams and How to Protect Yourself

Cairns Police have issued a warning to residents about the rising threat of romance scams, which can leave victims financially devastated. These scams often begin innocently, with unsolicited messages from strangers on social media platforms. Scammers create fake profiles that appear genuine and gradually build trust with the victim, sometimes sharing fabricated stories like being deployed overseas and needing financial help.

A recent investigation revealed that a 60-year-old Cairns woman lost $200,000 to a scammer who had meticulously built an online connection with her over time. Detective Acting Inspector Cindy Searle highlights how scammers manipulate victims by first establishing trust and then asking for money, often requesting transfers via cryptocurrency, cash in packages, or opening accounts for their access.

Victims of these scams may feel embarrassed or reluctant to seek help, but it’s important to remember that scammers are highly skilled in gaining trust. If you or someone you know has fallen victim to a romance scam, there are resources available such as ScamWatch, ID Care, and the Queensland Police Service to provide support and guidance on reporting the crime.

How to Help a Family Member or Friend

If a loved one shows signs of stress, depression, or withdrawing from usual activities, it might indicate they’ve fallen victim to a scam. If you suspect this, be patient and understanding, as victims often feel ashamed or embarrassed. Here’s what you can do:

  1. Help them contact their bank or credit card provider to monitor or halt transactions.
  2. Block the scammer on all communication platforms.
  3. Change your family member’s contact information and passwords.
  4. If personal information has been shared, advise the police and report the scam to relevant authorities.

Staying vigilant and informed can help prevent falling into these traps. Be cautious about online interactions, especially with people you’ve never met in person.
