Beware of Fake Charities and Financial Assistance Scams Targeting Vulnerable Australians

How Scammers Are Preying on People in Financial Hardship

Criminals are impersonating trusted charities and government programs to scam people experiencing financial hardship.

Scammers are using fake social media accounts to offer fraudulent financial aid schemes, mimicking legitimate organizations like Good Shepherd and the Salvation Army, which provide no-interest loans. These scammers ask for personal information, including identity details and myGov login credentials.

Once they have this information, they can lock individuals out of their accounts, preventing access to government benefits such as Centrelink and NDIS payments. Victims, already facing financial challenges, may lose crucial support and fall further behind on essential payments like rent.

How to Stay Safe:

  • Verify before trusting: Always confirm the legitimacy of any financial aid offer by contacting the organization directly, using official contact information.
  • Be cautious with social media: Avoid giving personal details through social media or to unsolicited contacts.
  • Act fast if scammed: If you suspect your information has been stolen, report it immediately to your bank and Services Australia.

By staying alert, you can protect yourself and others from falling victim to these scams.
