Australia’s Fossil Fuel Exports: A Threat to Global Climate Goals

Australia’s Role in Climate Change through Fossil Fuel Exports

Australia’s coal and gas exports are causing significant climate damage, making the country the second-largest contributor to global emissions from fossil fuels after Russia, according to a recent report by Climate Analytics.

While Australia only accounts for 1% of global emissions domestically, its exports are linked to 4.5% of global emissions, making it a key player in the ongoing climate crisis.

The report highlights that Australia is the third-largest fossil fuel exporter in the world, with coal being the primary contributor to its high emission levels.

Despite international commitments to reduce fossil fuel use, the Australian government continues to approve new coal and gas projects, with exports expected to remain steady until at least 2035.

This continued reliance on fossil fuel exports contradicts global efforts to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C, as outlined in the Paris Agreement.

Climate experts argue that Australia should do more to transition to renewable energy and encourage its trading partners, such as Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, to follow suit.

Without significant changes, Australia’s fossil fuel exports could undermine global climate goals, increasing emissions by 50% by 2035.
