Australia’s First Publicly-Funded Eating Disorder Centre Opens in Canberra

Australia’s first publicly-funded residential treatment centre for eating disorders has opened in Canberra, offering a unique and supportive environment for patients.

The centre, located in the suburb of Coombs, provides round-the-clock care for up to 12 individuals suffering from common eating disorders like anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and binge-eating disorder.

Unlike costly private facilities, this centre is accessible to more people, providing a home-like atmosphere designed to aid in recovery.

A New Hope for Eating Disorder Patients in Canberra

The centre is staffed by a multidisciplinary team, including doctors, nurses, dieticians, psychologists, and social workers.

The treatment approach is holistic, incorporating creative therapies, gentle exercise, and practical activities like gardening and cooking. The goal is to help patients develop a healthier relationship with food and their overall well-being.

Patients are encouraged to stay for about three months, during which they can receive visits from loved ones and gradually reintegrate into normal life.

Although the centre is not open to those under 16, it fills a significant gap in the care system, particularly for older teens and adults.

The facility marks a significant step forward in the care and support of individuals with eating disorders in Australia.
