Australian Border Force Intercepts Seven Illegal Fishing Vessels

Maritime Border Command Prevents Fishing Resource Damage

In a span of 48 hours, the Australian Border Force’s Maritime Border Command (MBC) intercepted seven illegal foreign fishing vessels off the Northern Territory and Western Australian coastlines. The interceptions, carried out between October 14 and 15, 2024, prevented the vessels from fishing in Australian waters, protecting the country’s fishing resources.

On October 14, MBC intercepted five vessels: eight fishers near Ashmore Island, seven at Cape Londonderry, six at Trepang Bay, and 13 at Cartier Island. The next day, two more vessels were intercepted: five fishers near Ashmore Island and 12 near Croker Island. A total of 51 crew members were found across all vessels.

In collaboration with the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), MBC officers boarded the vessels, seizing fishing equipment and enforcing legislative forfeitures. The vessels were escorted out of Australian waters to prevent further harm.

This fiscal year, MBC and AFMA have intercepted 83 illegal fishing vessels and prosecuted 48 Indonesian fishers in Australian courts.
