A United Front Against Wildfires
A team of 65 senior firefighters from Australia and New Zealand has arrived in the Pacific Northwest to assist the U.S. in combating severe wildfires. After briefings at the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, these experts were deployed to various wildfire hotspots, including the Willamette Complex South and the Pioneer Fire.
Over the coming weeks, they will take on key roles such as helibase managers, division supervisors, and safety officers, contributing their invaluable experience to the ongoing firefighting efforts.
Strengthening International Bonds
The collaboration between these nations and the U.S. is not new. For over 20 years, Australia and New Zealand have sent firefighting specialists to the U.S., while American crews have reciprocated during Australia’s fire seasons.

This mutual assistance highlights the strong, enduring partnership between these countries in facing one of the most challenging threats to their landscapes and communities.
As Jacque Buchanan, Regional Forester for the USDA Forest Service, noted, the expertise of these international teams is crucial in managing the prolonged and intense fire seasons in the U.S.
