Australia to Offer Free RSV Vaccines for Mothers and Newborns by Winter 2025

New Government Funding to Shield Infants from RSV

Australian mothers and newborns will have free access to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccines by Winter 2025, thanks to a $174.5 million investment from the Government.

The National Immunisation Program (NIP) will cover the maternal RSV vaccine, Abrysvo, for pregnant women. Additionally, the monoclonal antibody treatment Beyfortus will be available to protect infants directly, a collaborative effort supported by all states and territories.

RSV is a major cause of hospitalisation for infants, with 12,000 hospitalised annually due to severe infections. These immunisations aim to reduce hospitalisation rates, potentially keeping around 10,000 infants out of the hospital each year.

The RSV vaccine complements existing NIP-covered vaccines like those for whooping cough and flu, further safeguarding the health of mothers and babies.
