Strengthening Biosecurity to Protect Agriculture and Wildlife
The Australian Government is investing an additional $95 million to safeguard the country against avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1, which threatens agriculture, wildlife, and the economy. Although Australia is currently free from this strain, the global spread has raised concerns, especially within the poultry industry and among wild bird populations.
This funding includes $37 million dedicated to protecting agriculture, with $15 million to boost biosecurity response capabilities and surveillance. Another $5 million will procure vaccines for threatened bird species, and $10 million will support a national communication strategy to inform the public.
A further $35.9 million will focus on enhancing conservation efforts, preparing vulnerable species and key habitats for potential outbreaks. Additionally, $22.1 million will increase Australia’s stockpile of pandemic flu vaccines, ensuring public health preparedness.
This initiative builds on the over $1 billion of biosecurity funding announced in the 2023 Budget, reflecting Australia’s commitment to remaining vigilant against avian influenza.
