The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has condemned an online petition targeting breakdancer Rachael Gunn, also known as “Raygun,” who gained attention for her performance in Paris.
The petition, posted on Change.org, accused Gunn and Chef de Mission Anna Meares of unethical conduct in Gunn’s Olympic selection.
AOC Stands Firm Against False Claims
AOC chief executive Matt Carroll called for the petition’s removal, labeling it as defamatory, bullying, and filled with falsehoods aimed at inciting public hatred.
Carroll emphasized that Gunn was selected for the Australian Olympic Team through a transparent and independent process, free from any influence by Meares, who had no role in the qualification or nomination of athletes.
Gunn earned her spot in the Paris Olympics by winning the Oceania Breaking Championship in Sydney in October 2023, a competition judged by nine independent international judges under the World DanceSport Federation’s Olympic qualification system.
The AOC clarified that no government funding was involved in this selection, and the entire $25 million cost for the Australian Olympic Team’s campaign was covered by the AOC itself.
