In May 2023, Liliana Goodson, an American backpacker from Florida, found herself in legal trouble after accidentally smuggling a 24-carat gold-plated gun into Sydney Airport.
Goodson, who had traveled to Australia to attend clown school, initially pleaded not guilty, claiming she had forgotten about the gun in her luggage.
During a court hearing, a video was shown of Goodson’s interview with Australian Border Force (ABF) officials, where she admitted that she had forgotten the gun was in her suitcase.
She had even declared animal parts on her incoming passenger card but failed to mention the firearm. Phone records revealed that she had previously googled, “Can I carry a gun in my suitcase?” before her flight, indicating her awareness of the gun.

Goodson told investigators that she intended to use the pistol for protection, as she did in the U.S., despite having little experience with firearms. She also revealed that she had accidentally given away two other guns while living in the States.
Faced with the evidence, Goodson changed her plea to guilty and now faces up to two years in prison. Her sentencing is scheduled for November, where she plans to argue mental health issues contributed to her actions.
