ACT Police Warn Drug Users of Dangerous Synthetic Opioids
In response to a rising number of drug-related deaths, ACT Policing is urging drug users to prioritize their health and safety. This follows the 20th suspected drug-related death in 2024, believed to involve non-prescription opioids like heroin.
On October 23, a young man was found unresponsive in his home after allegedly consuming non-prescription drugs. Emergency responders were unable to revive him. Although the exact cause of his death is yet to be confirmed, ACT Police suspect synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl or nitazene, or high-purity heroin might be responsible. These substances can lead to respiratory failure and sudden death, posing a severe threat due to their unpredictable potency.
ACT Policing emphasizes that drug addiction is a health issue and encourages users, especially of heroin, to consider the risks associated with synthetic opioids. Users are advised to utilize CanTEST, a free, confidential service offering chemical analysis of drugs, along with tailored harm reduction advice.
Drug treatment and support services are also available for Canberra residents. If someone appears to be experiencing an overdose, ACT Policing advises calling Triple Zero (000) immediately for emergency assistance.
