How Götene is Using Creativity to Attract New Residents
Götene, a small town in Sweden, has come up with an innovative solution to combat its declining population and housing slump.
The town is selling plots of land for just 1 Swedish krona per square meter, roughly the price of a cup of coffee, to attract new residents. The campaign quickly went viral, drawing interest from around the globe.
Götene’s mayor, Johan Månsson, explains that the initiative aims to breathe new life into the local housing market and boost the town’s population, which is crucial due to an aging demographic and declining birth rates.

The town, located by Lake Vänern, Europe’s largest lake outside of Russia, offers a thriving job market, including a booming food industry and a nearby battery factory set to open in 2030.
The campaign has already sparked interest, with thousands of potential buyers and a few plots sold. If successful, Götene’s strategy could inspire other small towns facing similar challenges to adopt creative solutions to attract new residents and stimulate local growth.
